All-New Kia Magentis/Optima coming soon...

By Dr Long

Set to replace the long-serving Kia Optima, the new Magentis (debut in 2006) is still a platform-sharing cousin of the current Hyundai Sonata NF. Interestingly, unlike Hyundai, this mid-size executive sedan serves as KIAs flagship vehicle.

It is powered by a 2.0L engine with CVVT (variable valve timing), similar to the one found in the Sonata currently assembled by Oriental Holdings and sold by Kah Bintang. Output figures are 142bhp at 6000rpm and 188Nm of torque at 4250rpm, powering the front wheels via a 4-speed automatic gearbox. 0-100 km/h is claimed in 10.2secs while top whack is 208km/h.

This better-looking saloon is longer, wider and taller than the outgoing Optima, so it should provide more interior space. Buyers can also expect improved ride comfort and better body control, even though the suspension set up is different from its Hyundai relative. The Magentis is suspended by MacPhersons strut up front while sporting multilink arrangements for the rear axle. The Sonata has the more pricey double wishbones at all four corners. However, it is claimed that some 20kgs weight savings are accorded to the Magentis due to its simpler (and cheaper) suspension set up, so all may not be lost since unsprung weight would be lesser, in Kias favour.

Expect dual SRS airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), Brake Assist (BA) and stability control (ESP) plus traction control to be standard in higher-spec Naza-Kia Magentis. Whether the all-new KIA Magentis will still wear the el-cheapo Optima badge, remains to be seen at the time of writing. Prices will be only be known after the launch soon but you can safely guess that it will undercut the Sonata by RM10k 20k, depending on which of the two trim levels - as anticipated - is preferred.

New Brabus W204 C-Class

Concurrent with the market introduction of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class in stages the world over, BRABUS presents an exclusive sport program for the new junior executive sedan. Highlights of the product lineup are the BRABUS 4.0L displacement engine with 332 hp /244 kW for the V6 petrol models, an elegant aerodynamic-enhancement program, light-alloy wheels with 20-inch diameter and corresponding suspensions, plus numerous individual interior options.

For the new C280 and C350 models BRABUS offers its BRABUS outbored engine. By installing a special crankshaft and larger pistons displacement is increased to 4.0L. Crucially, the four-valve cylinder heads are optimized for gas flow, and fitted with special camshafts. The conversion further includes a stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system with metal catalysts, and newly programmed engine electronics.

The impressive results of the conversion are a maximum power output of 332 hp/244 kW and a peak torque of 420Nm at 4200 rpm. This uprated C-Class sprints to 100km/h in just 5.9 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 275 km/h.

BRABUS stainless-steel quad sport exhaust systems are available for all engine variants. More dynamics for the new C-Class also come from custom-tailored BRABUS tyre/wheel combinations with diameters of 17, 18, 19 and 20 inches and corresponding BRABUS sport suspensions, lowering kits and sport sway bars. The largest wheels for the new C-Class are BRABUS Monoblock VI, E and S light-alloy wheels in size 9Jx20 front and back, fitted with tyres sizes of 235/30 ZR20 in front and 265/25 ZR20 on the rear axle.

The BRABUS design team also went into the wind tunnel to develop aerodynamic-enhancement components that not only look great but also offer maximum aerodynamic efficiency. The sporty styled BRABUS front spoiler lends the C-Class a more sporty appearance with its generously dimensioned air inlets for improved supply of cooling air for radiators and front brakes. It also minimizes lift on the front axle, thus improving directional stability at high speeds. Four integrated foglights further optimize active safety. BRABUS offers a three-piece rear spoiler that serves as an aerodynamic foil on the boot lip, apart from enhancing that purposeful look.
The bottom rear apron wrap around a pair of twin tail pipes which are interspersed with a good-looking aerodynamic diffuser with what looks like a central blizzard light.

Mercedes-Benz W204 C-Class Wagon

Looking much like a scaled down version of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class, these are some images of the upcoming C-Class Estate, set to debut at the Frankfurt International Motorshow 2007.

Engine range for this C-Class estate is expected to mirror its saloon sibling. In this connection, the most brutal version is expected to be the C63 AMG Estate, with a sporty silhoutte much like the R63 AMG. Expected to be powered by the familiar AMG's 6.3L V8, it will likely be more agile and quicker due to its smaller dimensions and lower kerb weight.

Nissan Livina 1.6 and 1.8 confirmed for launch before end-2007

Edaran Tan Chong Motor Sdn Bhd (ETCM), distributor of Nissan vehicles in Malaysia, will launch a compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), the Nissan Livina in Q4 2007.

Its executive director Datuk Dr Ang Bon Beng disclosed (on 3rd August 2007) that the locally-assembled Nissan Livina with engine capacities of 1.6 litre and 1.8 litre would cost below RM100,000. The 7-seater MPV would target the middle-income customers and compete in the lower segment of the MPV market in the country, he said after a company function.

"The response for Livina in Indonesia has been very encouraging. We hope to achieve the same success here," he added, saying more than 5,000 units were sold in three months after its launch in Indonesia in April.

Honda Civic Type R and Hybrid Officially in Malaysia Now!

Honda Malaysia has launched the latest 3rd generation Civic Type R and 2nd generation Civic Hybrid, both based on the current 8th generation Civic. For the local market, the Civic Type R available now is the JDM four-door FD2 sedan form, unlike the hatchback version available in Singapore which is similar to the one for the U.K. market. Incidentally, Malaysia is the only country in Asia outside of Japan which is getting this version of the Type R, officially that is. You can have it in any colour as long as its Championship White!

Powering the new Civic Type R is Honda Motor Co.s famous K20A DOHC i-VTEC engine pumping out 222bhp at 8000rpm and 215Nm of torque at 6100rpm, all from a 2.0L normally aspirated petrol motor. A six-speed close ratio manual transmission - equipped with a torque-sensitive, helical limited slip differential system - mediates the transfer of power to both front wheels.

Unique power-enhancing features that differentiates the Type R from the regular K20A-powered brethren are a straightened, short, single-tract and equal length intake manifold, a large diameter drive-by-wire throttle body, narrow angle exhaust manifold collector and full-length straightened dual exhaust pipe.

To handle those extra horses and pulling power, the Type R dampers have higher damping rates (1.25 times in front, 1.6 for the rear) than the previous Integra Type R, as well as an increased valve size and load capacity. The spring rates and ground clearance over the standard Civic have also been revised while the stabiliser bars for both front and rear are thicker and of course, stiffer.

Standard alloys for the sporty Type R are 18-inch of multi spoke design, wearing with 225/40 series Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tyres. Needless to say, the braking system is also uprated with four-piston Brembo aluminium calipers grabbing 320mm ventilated discs for the front, and 282mm discs for the rear. This ensure a shorter stopping distance and improved resistance to brake fade. Looking more aggressive than the Modulo bodykit, the Type R aero kit, with a large tail spoiler in tow, rounds off the sporty external detailing.

Interiorly, you get Honda's trademark Type R dual-tone black and red trim on seats (front bucket-type) and door trim. The Civic dual-layer instrument panel has been made sportier, most obviously is the Type R face tachometer that redlines at 8400rpm plus shift lights ala Formula 1. There are also lots of aluminium bits and inserts inside: pedals, footrest, side step garnish, gear shift knob, serial number plate (located on the gear console) to make this top-of-the-line Civic exclusive to own.

The Civic Type R is priced at RM199,800 on-the-road, inclusive of road tax and insurance. At the time of writing, all 42 units of the Type-Rs allocated to Malaysia for the remaining months of 2007 have found future owners who cant wait to collect them.

On the opposite of this 8th gen Civic spectrum, the new Civic Hybrid voices a green theme, which comes in the shade of Fluorite Silver Metallic. Honda Malaysia is hoping this will appeal to a selected niche of motorists who are environmentally conscious and as such value efficiency, fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. Sitting under the bonnet of this Honda petrol hybrid sedan is Hondas Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology system, first seen in 1999 and then extended to the Civic family in 2003.

The Civic Hybrid draws its power from a 1.3L i-DSI engine equipped with 3-stage i-VTEC variable valve timing, assisted by a secondary power source in the form of a fourth generation IMA system to offer improved power output, better fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The IMA system consists of an ultra-thin DC brushless electric motor mounted between the engine and the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) drivetrain; this provides additional torque and power by engaging during vehicle acceleration. At low speed cruising (about 40kmh), the electric motor solely powers the vehicle.

All the electric power created by the motor is stored in a compact battery box called the Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) - consisting of a rear-mounted compact nickel metal hydride battery and power control unit - which controls the flow of electricity to and from the electric motor. Recharging takes place when braking, slowing down or traveling downhill; battery life is claimed to be about five to seven years, which should be a relief to those contemplating ownership of this tech marvel of higher energy efficiency.

The Civic Hybrid is going for RM162,800 on-the-road, inclusive of road tax and insurance. Honda Malaysia is targeting an annual sales figure of 60 units each of the new Civic variants. Apparently, not every Honda dealers have the new Civic Type R on display. For example, not even Malaysias top Honda dealer in sales volume, Peringgit Sri Motor in Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur has a sample showroom unit. Hmmstrange.

Peugeot 308 RC Z Concept

Based on the new Peugeot 308 which itself is slated for appearance at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show 2007 another Pug sports concept will take centre stage in the form of Peugeot 308 RC Z Concept Car.

The 308 RC Z Concept is a 2+2 Coupe with a lightweight body and chassis made largely of aluminium and carbon fibre components. With a length of 4.276 m (similar as the hatchback), a width of 1.840 m (25mm more than the hatchback) and a height of only 1.32 metre, the streamlined design ensures both improved performance and reduced fuel consumption, as well as reduced CO2 emissions.

Its stylish frontal visage is copied directly from the 308, but has been given a sharper and sportier lower panel incorporating the single air intake, chrome front grille and integral front fog lights.

Peugeots trademark feline headlamps extend along the line of the bonnet to house four cylindrical lights, clearly visible through the clear lenses. The curved shape of the roof panel and rear window assists the airflow over the rear of the vehicle, creating sufficient rear downforce to eliminate the need for a rear spoiler, thereby preserving the clean, uncluttered lines of the compact coupe.

Reminding us much of the Porsche Cayman S, two centrally mounted rear exhaust pipes are integrated into the wraparound rear bumper lower panel. To achieve this, the rear exhaust muffler is located in a transverse position where it also serves as an aerodynamic diffuser, yet still allows sufficient space for the storage of a spare wheel in the boot floor.

Painting the 308 RC Z Concept in rich metallic grey is by a special process using finely milled metallic particles. This gives the impression that the vehicle has been formed from a single block of metal, enhancing further the cohesiveness of the overall design.

Interior fascia panel has been taken directly from the 308 hatchback. The dashboard is leather stitched, with the use of chrome, aluminium and black lacquer detailing creating a sporty, upmarket feel and touch. With this in mind, a Bell&Ross clock has been placed in the centre of the fascia panel, between the two central air vents, its dials perfectly matching that of the instruments panel. It looks like designer watches are making its way into upmarket/sporty vehicles these days with Bentley being another prime example. Time to put Seiko (preferably with analog dials) timepieces into the GS300, Lexus!

Another exclusive feature is the bucket type front seats with polished aluminium eyelets detailing, the style of which is also reflected in the design of the inner door panels. The ergonomically designed drivers seat ensures the driver is always planted firmly in control even around those snaking bends. At the rear there are two small folding leather seats. They look rather impractical, even for small children, with their small sizes mirroring the ones found in the new Audi TT.

Powering the 308 RC Z is a 1.6 litre THP turbo-charged petrol engine developed from the EP6DTS engine, similar to the one sitting in front of the 207GTi. However, power has been boosted to 218bhp, possibly with a higher boost (larger turbine) and reworked ECU mapping. Incidentally this powerplant is also shared with the all new Mini Cooper S since the turbo direct-injection engine development costs were borne by both BMW and PSA.

Maximum torque of 280Nm is achieved at low revs (no exact details out yet), while an overboost function can hike torque to 300Nm. In the Mini Cooper S, maximum torque is 240Nm with an overboost kick to 260Nm. All these manic power and torque are transferred via a speed manual gearbox to the front wheels!

The front suspension uses many aluminium components to help reduce weight and ensure exceptional road holding, excellent steering accuracy and better road feel. The rear suspension, developed from the hatchback, consists of a torsion-beam, two rear suspension arms and an integral anti-roll bar. It has been specially modified to take account of the wider vehicle track and tyres. For the record, the front and rear tracks have been increased by 59 mm compared to the hatchback.

Braking power is enhanced by larger (360 mm) diameter ventilated discs at the front with four piston callipers. Polished alloy 19 rims are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 245/40 R19 tyres all around.

While the exceptional road holding of the 308 RC Z forms the basis of its primary safety, it is supplemented by safety equipment borrowed from the 308 hatchback such as the Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and the directional bi-xenon headlamps. Similarly, in terms of secondary safety, the 308 RC Z uses the same impact protection structures designed to deform in a controlled manner, maximising the absorption of impact forces.

For Wheels is guessing that the 308 RC Z will make it to production minus some of the fancy elements and trims to mount a challenge to the Audi TT 2.0 TFSI, giving us a possibly a more affordable yet still high performance coupe at that.
