2008 Mitsubishi Colt

Representing nearly 30% of Mitsubishi Motors Europe sales, the B-segment hatch Colt soldiers on into its 4th year with some minor cosmetic upgrades and upsizing of alloy wheels. For the upcoming Franfurt International Motor Show in September 2007, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is expeced to reveal special editions to the 2008 Colt range featuring tinted headlamps/taillights, black (instead of dark blue) dashboard/door trim panel, redesigned wing mirror mounted on the A-pillar window frame, new design 15- and 16-inch alloy wheels and improved standard equipments.

Interestingly, for the European market, the Colt is offered in an automatic option named Allshift which is an automated manual gearbox, much like the one found in the smart forfour. Imported Colts from Japan for the Malaysian market, being the Colt 1.5 and Colt Turbo Ralliart, are all Invecs-III CVT equipped.

Right-Hand Drive W204 New C-Class spotted in Bangkok!

Words: Dr Long and Peter Lee
Pictures: Peter Lee

Many people who have seen the new C-Class in the metal overseas have commended Mercedes-Benz for a job well done for the W204 looked upmarketly handsome, better than the printed or online images. The fresh lines and creases (especially the rising slant at the flanks plus lower chromed strips) are pleasantly reminiscent of the S-Class. Meanwhile, the new Cs rear end which we at autocarsp thought was design-frozen in early 2000s (somewhat like a scaled down W211 Es butt) didnt turn out to be as recycled as it looked initially.

autocarsp have its correspondent, Peter Lee in Bangkok to check out one of the first few right-hand drive W204s to be available in South East Asia, or Asia for that matter.
His frank and candid visual review of the all-new C-Class after the following pictures

Just yesterday, I had the rare opportunity to view the new C-Class Avantgarde in the flesh (metal) at the Central World Plaza in Bangkok. This is the earliest unit in Thailand, imported and marketed by a grey importer here. I can only make comments regarding the visual aspects of the car since I did not have a chance to test drive this spanking new junior executive from Mercedes-Benz.

Of course, I will be making comparisons with its nearest rival, the BMW 3-series. I think of all persons to make comments, I should be the fairest as I currently own both a Brabus K4 (W211 E200K) and the latest BMW 335i (E92) coupe. Having said that, I am not aligned to either brands or makes.

In brief, BMW 3 had better be careful. This car looks tons better than current 3-series with curves and creases at the correct places, making the car look expensive and beautiful. With a matching bodykit, this car should be the talk of the town.

However when it came to the interior, things didnt look so good. There is really no Wow factor. Having looked at the steering and the CD control panel, even my Brabus E-Class appears so much better at these places. The cabin is a real disappointment, in my honest opinion.

The acid test for this all-new C-Class of course, will be a test drive. I owned a C230K Avantgarde Sport just 2 years ago. Its Kompressor engine was lively (should be similar to the present engine) but chassis dynamics and ride comfort was somewhat poor. Lets see if this new C has got her act together

Mazda's Rotary Engine 40th Anniversary: RX-8 Limited Edition

To commemorate 40 years of Mazdas rotary engine vehicles sold globally, Mazda Motor Corporation has commenced sales of a limited edition model Mazda RX-8 throughout Japan called the RX-8 Rotary Engine 40th Anniversary edition.

In 1967, Mazdas first vehicle powered by a rotary engine, the Cosmo Sport (known as the 110S overseas) was introdiced to the world. Since then, Mazda has preservered to make and sell various rotary engine-powered cars, most notably the Familia Rotary Coupe (known as the R100 overseas), the Savanna (RX-3), RX-7, and Eunos Cosmo. Currently, Mazda is working on technical improvements in fuel economy and environmental performance for its rotary engines. Mazda also intends to advance the potential of the hydrogen rotary engine as part of its long-term vision for technology development, Sustainable Zoom-Zoom, which was announced in March 2007.

The RX-8 Rotary Engine 40th Anniversary model is based on the RX-8 Type S (six-speed manual transmission) and the Type E (six-speed automatic transmission) model grades. The interior is designed to evoke the Cosmo Sport heritage and includes exclusive black genuine leather and light silver ALCANTARA combination seat covers. The exclusive Marble White body color and special limited edition badges mounted on the side panels are perfectly suited to commemorate the 40th year of Mazdas rotary engine vehicle sales. Special equipment - including exclusive Bilstein dampers and a urethane foam-filled front suspension cross member - has been fitted for a higher quality ride and better performance.

On a related note, a reliable source at Cycle & Carriage Bintang (CCB) has indicated that the franchise holder and sole distributor for Mazda'a vehicle in Malaysia will possibly introduce the 2008 model RX-8 by H2 2008. Apparently, Mazda Motor Corp.'s R&D engineers in Japan are concerned about our petrol quality for its RENESIS twin-rotor engine (much like LEXUS Japan engineers initially).

Mazda Motor Corp. has revealed a teaser image of its all-new Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan) ahead of the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Its underpinnings is shared with the new Ford Mondeo and S-MAX.

Engine range is expected to be carried over from the last model, with possibly some power/torque hike and better efficiency. This new 6 replacement model will go on sale as early as November in Europe. Will we get to see this handsome mid-size executive sedan in Malaysia by H1 2008?

Brabus 30th Anniversary

On occasion of its 30th anniversary, BRABUS will present an automotive wolf in sheeps clothing at the Frankfurt International Auto Show IAA 2007. Rumoured to be a tuned-up W204 C-Class, this will be the fastest vehicle in its segment. The debut will be accompanied by the launch of the newly designed BRABUS website at http://www.brabus.com/.

Bodo Buschmann founded BRABUS back in 1977. 30 years later, BRABUS is the worlds largest independent automobile tuner. It is considered a car manufacturer by the German Federal Motor Vehicle Registration Agency (Kraftfahrtbundesamt). What started back in 1984 with a Mercedes 190 equipped with a V8 engine, led eventually to the BRABUS E V12 that in 1996 set a new world record for fastest street-legal sedan in the Guinness Book of World Records with a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph). Today that same record is held by the BRABUS ROCKET with a top speed of 365.7 km/h (227.2 mph).

The idea of dropping an immensely powerful engine into the engine bay of a sedan with almost indiscernible exterior modifications now reaches its latest pinnacle with the debut of a new wolf in sheeps clothing. The latest BRABUS special model based on the latest Mercedes-Benz C-Class delivers performance that only a very few of the worlds super sports cars can match.

Since 1997 some ten million auto enthusiasts have visited the continually updated BRABUS website. Now a completely redesigned website goes online at http://www.brabus.com/. Users can find loads of interesting information on BRABUS, its 30-year history and the extensive BRABUS product lineup. An interactive virtual tour also offers glimpses behind the scenes of the dream factory in Bottrop.

The BRABUS Art Club is another new feature of the online presence of BRABUS. For the inauguration, the club will feature a photo editing contest. Online visitors can choose from various BRABUS models and then render these models in scenery they can design. An international jury will select the best of these art works that will be presented on the new BRABUS website and winners will be awarded prizes.

All-New Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0GT in Malaysia

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has introduced the latest Lancer model for the Malaysian market last night. For a start, the 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer is only available in one form - the 2.0 GT. The more wicked Evolution X version will likely make in to our shores in 2008, as with the other markets worldwide.

The new Lancers 2.0L 4-pot (codenamed 4B11) churns out 155PS at 6000rpm and 199Nm of torque at 4250rpm. Torque is transferred to the front wheels via Mitsubishis INVECS-III CVT transmission. Incidentally, this is the 2nd officially-marketed make in Malaysia to have a CVT box. Other models like the Toyota Yaris and the new Nissan Latio have been down-modded to run with regular 4-speed torque converters in Malaysia. Bravo MMM!

There is a pair of steering-mounted magnesium paddle shifters, should you want to overide automatic settings and sample 6 virtual gears manually. Large and cool-looking 18 inch alloy wheels are suspended by MacPherson struts up front and multilink set-up at the rear.

As with most 2.0L cars these days, automatic climate control aircon is standard for the Lancer 2.0GT. Premium quality Nappa leather seats are a first in class, quite surprising even for a full Japan CBU unit. Safety features include dual SRS airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD). Boot opening is via a boot lid release button on the remote control fob or the internal boot release lever since there is no external handle/latch or key hole. Capacity is a fairly generous 400litre, with both rear wheels' hump intrusions being a volume limiting factor. However, the external "scissor" hinges set-up is both wise and space saving.

The all-new Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0 GT is available in four colours: Red Metallic, Cool Silver Metallic, Medium Purplish Gray Mica and Black Mica. MMM tags every Lancer 2.0GT sold with a 5-year or 100,000km warranty, plus free maintenance for the first 3 years or 50,000km. If thats not attractive enough, the on-the-road price of RM115,980 (with insurance) will likely swing quite a number of buyers final decisions towards this tri-diamond C-segment sedan.

New Kia Spectra5 hatchback to replace liftback predecessor?

Sole distributor and franchise-holder for Kia vehicles in Malaysia, Naza-Kia Sdn Bhd will be launching the Spectra liftback (facelift of first gen Sephia) replacement model soon in hatchback form, badged as Spectra5.

Pictured below is the true 2nd generation Kia Cerato hatchback, albeit in USDM form. The new Cerato has been available since 2005 but has undergone a facelift this year.

While understandably sleeker and more up-to-date than the older Spectra 1.6 (pictured below), it is still somewhat baffling as to why the hatch is picked over the booted Spectra, as seen in the last image.

Watch this space for more details as local distributor Naza-Kia officially unveil this budget C-segment vehicle soon...

Note: The Cerato is no longer on sale in the UK as the Kia Ceed has replaced it.
